Talking To Your Partner Without The Awkward

Talking To Your Partner Without The Awkward

My girl asked me how I told my man I wanted things different in bed without him hearing "you're bad at this." Here's exactly what I said. Steal it.

First — the thing nobody admits. Most of us never have this conversation at all. We adjust quietly. We fake it, we stop starting things, and eighteen months later we're mad about something we never actually said.

I did that for two years. Ask me how that went.

Rule 1: not in the bed, not after

Do NOT do this naked. Do not do it thirty seconds after it's over. His guard is all the way up in that moment and anything you say lands like a review.

I did it in the car. Driving, both facing forward, no eye contact, radio low. That setup takes about 80% of the pressure out of it.

Say it in the car. Trust me on the car.

Rule 2: lead with want, not with wrong

"I want" opens a door. "You don't" starts a fight. Same information, completely different night.

Here's what I actually said:

"I've been thinking about us and I want to try some things. Not because anything's wrong — because I want MORE of it, and I want it to be something we talk about instead of just do."

That's the whole opener. Notice what's not in it: no complaints, no comparisons, no "I read an article."

Rule 3: bring ONE thing

Vague goes nowhere. Come with one specific thing you want to try and let that be the whole conversation. One. A list feels like a performance review.

Mine was slowing down. That was my entire ask.

Rule 4: let him sit with it

Say your piece and then genuinely drop it. Don't fill the silence, don't ask how he's feeling about it, don't bring it back up that night.

Mine went quiet about two days. Then HE brought it up — which is exactly what you want, because by then it's his idea too.

Now let me be honest about something

Some of my nerve in that car was chemical and I'm not going to act like it wasn't.

I'd been using the Big O pops and I felt good in my own body in a way I hadn't in a long time. Tight, wet, everything turned up — and when sex actually feels that good, asking for more of it stops feeling like a hard conversation. It's easy to ask for more of something you're enjoying.

The pops didn't have the conversation for me. But feeling like myself is what got me to open my mouth, and I'd be lying if I left that part out.

What changed

Not overnight and not everything. But we talk now — during, after, in the kitchen the next day. He asks questions. I answer them honestly instead of managing his feelings about the answer.

Two years of silence, fixed by one conversation in a car with the radio on. Have the conversation. You're going to be mad at how long you waited.
